I would imagine that all of us have been asked, at one time or another about our reasons for moving to France.
The question is generally fired in our direction by French neighbours and friends who perhaps regard us with a bit of cautious curiosity.
However, can anyone remember WHEN you decided to move and WHERE you were at the time?

I distinctly remember where I was and the occasion.

I was on my honeymoon in April 1990 with my husband Nick. (obviously!)
We were staying over in Le Mans en route to Barcelona.
We had just been to one of our favourite restaurants there called Le Grenier A Sel, and were taking a stroll along the banks of the river Sarthe.

We found a cosy bench, and sat down overlooking the river and let the water and time pass slowly.
As ever, we talked about our love of France, and how happy we were to be back there.
Suddenly, out of the blue, my husband said to me:

“Promise me that we will move here one day”

Twenty one years on, it’s good to know that we kept one of our first promises as husband and wife.

So, what about you? When was your deciding moment?

I’m not a Monday girl. Nor am I winter lover – My term for this time of year is known to all as “The Dark Time”

I feel low, depressed even, and hate it when the light fades at sunset.

But today was different .

Due to a lack of velux blinds in our top floor bedroom, the sun obligingly streamed through the six big windows to wake us up, and generally the weather has been bright and sunny, and tinged with the most fleeting of showers.

A late afternoon drive through the Anjou vineyards to Angers, albeit to drop my OH off to return to work in Berlin, was both beautiful and scenic.

Here’s hoping that the next few months will be as kind.

I saw this little insightful nugget when trawling through Facebook yesterday, and it really made me smile.
I reflected whether we all tend to talk up our lives through our social networks, and why?
We are now exposing ourselves to hundreds, if not thousands of people we would never have “met” before the social networking boom and that brings a certain requirement to keep up appearances, even if it is at a subconscious level.

As the eldest of four, I have vivid memories of appearances being altered when visitors called.
On hearing a car pulling up outside the house, my mother, peering through our front room window would announce the arrival of an entourage of family members.
Together we would skate around the house, plumping cushions, running the Hoover around, wiping a few straggling dishes on the drainer and hurling all signs of floor debris – toys, newspapers, books, – into our under stairs cupboard to be hidden from view.
The resultant frenzy took place during a five-minute breathing space where my father would go out front to do the meet and greet and kick the odd tyre of my Granddad/Uncle’s latest motor, and offering to carry in the bags and coats of the ladies.

Once installed in the house, tea was brewed, food was prepared, and, depending on who was visiting, other activities spawned from this: I might play a board game with my cousins, my father would play for my great-grandmother to sing.
Within the space of half an hour, the house would have returned to its semi-ramshackle state as is the way of things when family and friends call.

However, we all still enjoyed the time together, regardless of the mess on the floor and the pile of unwashed dishes.
So, why do we big things up on Facebook?
If we are all truly friends, there should be no need to do so, as we should accept each other the way we are, warts and all.

So, I ‘m signing off with my first truthful Facebook status of the New Year:
“In bed writing a blog post wearing yesterday’s tee-shirt – husband next to me in his vest with his grey hairs stuck to it”

I have just been looking on Facebook, and it seems that so many of my contacts in France are anticipating that this wonderful Indian Summer will be drawing to a close by the end of the week.
Ironically here in Spain, the temperature has gone up, and yet the wind, which up to now has been very warm has cooled, and the sea is much less choppy than it has been.
Either way, it is comforting to have some warm days before the “Dark Time” arrives, as it’s known in the Haddock household.
I love the change of seasons- I look forward to lighting my word burner, switching on my Aga and cooking on it, staying in contact with all those who I have got to know through Survive France, Ladies In France Together and of course, Facebook

There will be plenty to read during the longer evenings, with The Poitou Charentes Journal from Rachel and Kathryn, The Deux Sevres Monthly, from Sarah Berry, This French Life from Craig McGinty plus loads of well thumbed books and the odd DVD from Paperback Jan, who tirelessly drives around the countryside, supplying us all with something to need.

I have just finished reading Keith Floyd’s autobiography Shaken,But Not Stirred.
It was a fine read, and although ghost written, was an honest reflection of the infamous TV chef’s life.
Towards his later years, he spent time living in Spain, not a million miles away from where we are on holiday, and he talks about one or two places, which I wanted to try.
The first was the Roman Oasis, owned by a friend of his, and I quickly found it on line yesterday. I telephoned, but was greeted with a very polite English male voice:

“Oh sorry darling, last night was the last of the season – we had a 150 people here, and we had a real BEANO of a time!”
Suffice to say, we didn’t get there, but on further inspection, I noted that they did indeed serve baked beans on toast, along with other British delights, hence his description of a good time being a “beano” . My experience of the word is confined to the children’s comic, of which I am still a fan.
It would have been pleasant to follow a great foodie’s tracks, but this time it seems, it was not to be.
It has left me wondering though, that perhaps even the great Keith Floyd missed a taste of home, and that is why he went.

Today we went off for lunch to El Restaurante San Rafael, just a few kms up the road from where we are staying.
It came highly recommended, as a bastion of traditional Spanish cooking.
How true.
We were some of the first to arrive, but were quickly seated and as it is unusually, all indoor seating, the air conditioning was swiftly turned on.

Although I am a food lover, I am wary when eating in Spain for two reasons: The food is generally quite rich, and the portions tend to be on the large side.

Our waiter politely handed us the English menu, and I, even more politely, made our order, and translated everything we wanted back into Spanish. He seemed quite impressed, and as a reward, started to litter our table with morsels of food as a run up to the main event. Fat, salty olives, tiny seafood tarts, deep fried salt-fish croquetas, along with half a flat loaf with a dish of local olive oil, laced with fat cloves of garlic.

We ordered a mixed starter, which would have comfortably fed six people, consisting of fried morcilla and chorizo sausages, ratatouille, smoked salmon, duck pate and membrillo.
This was clearly a place for serious eaters.

For ur main course we chose baby clams and pollo al ajillo – chicken in garlic with a terracotta pot of sliced potatoes, cooked al horno to boot. Again, enough to feed six comfortably.

Dessert consisted of home made ice cream and leche frita, a kind of milk pudding that is deep fried(yes!)
I had recently seen Rick Stein cook this on TV and wanted to try it – It was delicious, especially with a chilled glass of moscatel to accompany it.

I feel we shall come again before we leave.

I was recently interviewed by EuradioNantes when I talked about hereditary hemochromatosis.
I was a bit apprehensive, but the interview seemed to go well apart from a little throat clearing here and there.
I had a message this morning from Catrina Chambers who does the New Perspectives show that they had to “edit out” bits of my interview as I had mentioned FACEBOOK on air, which is now illegal in France.
My reference was intended to drive people through to the Facebook page I have created on Hemochromatosis Awareness.
How very sad, how very short-sighted
Merci mille fois Monsieur Sarkozy.

As I am in the middle of a major cook fest for tomorrow’s yard sale at St Gemme, I am using the time waiting for my cakes to cook wisely. I am thinking.
It all started at Hyper U in Parthenay yesterday.
My daughter was attending her oral exam in Spanish in Parthenay, and as luck should have it, there was a large supermarket next door, so I decided to go shopping during the hour I was hanging around.
I freely and openly admit to shopping in budget supermarkets, local farmers’ markets, local artisan bakers and food producers, speciality shops (Chinese, Moroccan), and only cross the threshold of the supermarket giants when I can’t get it elsewhere.
My reasoning is simple: They are all vastly overpriced. I naïvely thought I could get some stocks of things that the budget boys don’t sell and that I wouldn’t find too much off a difference if I shopped carefully. How wrong I was.
I felt at one point, after forking out 3.15 euros for a tub of marscapone, that I was assisting the supermarket by subsidising their rather fancy shelving in the Fromagerie section of the store.
I made a quick getaway with as little as possible, and comforted myself lf that I had been able to buy my daughter some British biscuits (excellent study fodder) and vowed never to go there again.
I had hovered over a modest piece of beef for 18 euros, after deciding it would barely feed 4 people, and there were countless other items there that were, in my opinion, vastly overpriced for what they are.
On reflection, I realised that supermarkets play on one fact: Busy people want a one stop shop AT ANY PRICE.
Working families have precious little time to go baking their own bread or knocking up half a dozen sausage rolls for the Scout’s Jamboree – Supermarkets sell an abundance of food that we feel we ought to be giving our families, but time evades us and we feel guilty and compensate by buying something at the supermarket during our frenetic weekly dash that is a poor second.
There is really a way around this: Shed the guilt, and adopt the mantra “Less is more”.
Even if you only managed to make something home-made once a week, the introduction of real home cooked food will compensate for any short cuts you are forced to make when you are busy.
Take home-made pesto as an example.
If you make a batch of this, it will keep for months in the fridge, and a dollop added to an after work pasta dish, is by far superior to anything you buy in a supermarket. It will do for several meals and at a stroke, you have introduced the real thing into the family diet for 30 minutes of your time.
Home made peanut butter can be made in about 10 minutes, and can be used for toast, sandwiches in lunch boxes, and a wonderful base for a satay sauce. Again, at a fraction of the cost of the shop bought equivalent.
I will post up these recipes and others, with suggestions as to how to use them at meal times. Money saved, time efficient, and a contented family. What more could you ask?

We were footloose and fancy free this weekend as Eve was off to Les Sables D’Olonne for a pop concert so we decided to take out a jaunt out to Chinon for lunch.
We settled at a shady table at the Cafe des Arts in the central square and had a leisurely lunch watching the world go by.
As I seem to spend my life hiding from the sun, I thought that the shady spot would be an ideal place to pass an afternoon. Not so. The heavy canvas parasols that were shading us just served as heat traps and I felt myself getting warmer and warmer.
Although we enjoyed our meal, we decided to move on as my husband suggested the cool arbour that is the Caves de Monplaisir for a wine tasting. The ancient caves carved out of the cliffs were wonderfully cool which aided the enjoyment of the wine tasting.
We bought a refreshing Chardonnay and went on our way, although I was a bit reluctant to leave the cool environment of the caves.
We headed out towards Cande St. Martin and stumbled upon Le Chateau du Petit Thouars, so we decided to call in.
We drove though the gates and slowly ascended an impressive drive which dropped away to our left onto stunning parkland. Owned by the du Petit Thouars family it is still their home, and the wine production has added yet another chapter to this family’s history.
Their Reserve 2008 struck us as a winner, so we bought a few bottles , lingered over the wonderful views and bade our farewells.
Our last stop was aside the Chateau de Montsoreau at the Hotel le Bussy for a cool drink on their stunning chateau overlooking the river.
We spied people like ants scurrying around the parapets of the chateau nearby and watched the boats glide slowly downriver, carrying eager tourists on to their next destination.
The temperature was in the low 30′s and storm clouds had begun to gather, so it was time to head back to the car and homeward bound.
We made it ahead of the rains and watched it clatter down from the comfort of our lounge.
We were cool at last, but replete on good memories from the day.
